Newmarket downs Markham, 5-2Ray Twinney Rink 1 Thu, Feb 23, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Lester Brown grabbed two points to lead the Newmarket Hurricanes to a 5-2 victory over the Markham Waxers. The win gave Newmarket a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. Markham was unable to stop the Hurricanes from sending pucks towards the net, and Newmarket eventually piled up 38 shots on goal. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Newmarket additionally got points from Brown, who also had one goal and one assist and Bowman Webster, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Newmarket got a goal from Matt Dineen as well. Other players who recorded assists for Newmarket were Tyler Mort, who had two and Jeff DiNallo, Jake Weidner, and Austin Rigney, who each chipped in one. The Waxers' defense let in more goals than it usually has this year. Markham averages two goals allowed per game. The Waxers were helped by Patrick Stillar, who racked up one goal. Stillar scored on the power play 1:21 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Markham. Calvin Higley assisted on the tally. Rickey Buehler also scored for Markham. More assists for Markham came via Jamie Kendra, Sammy Banga, and Andrew Radjenovic, who contributed one each. Matthew Wintjes turned away 25 pucks between the pipes for the Hurricanes. Newmarket incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Markham's Chris Perugini stopped 33 shots out of the 37 that he faced. The Waxers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
