Wellesley falls to Ayr in overtime, 4-3 (OT)

The Ayr Centennials' Alex Richard scored 8:00 into overtime to beat the Wellesley Applejacks, 4-3 (OT).

After the loss made the series score 1-3 in the best of seven series, Wellesley faces elimination next time out.

Ayr almost relinquished a two-score lead. The Centennials made it 3-1 on a goal by Declan Kaster at 3:59 in the third period. The Applejacks got to within 3-2 on a power play goal by Connor McLeod at 9:04 in the third period.

Wellesley's power play was ineffective against Ayr's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Centennials' offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 48 shots put on the Applejacks' net. Ayr was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled six minors and one majorfor 17 minutes in penalty time. The leading offender was Nathan Redford, who totaled five minutes in penalty time with one major.

Ayr additionally got points from Philip Durnford, who also had one goal and one assist and Richard, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Ayr got a goal from Jon Witt as well. In addition, Ayr received assists from Cody Tapsell, Eric Schuster, Andrew Richard, and Adam Brubacher, who contributed one each.

Wellesley excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Applejacks kept the Centennials' goalie busy throughout the game, and Lee Doherty made 37 saves on 40 shots.

Wellesley was helped by Tyler Eckert, who registered one goal. Eckert scored 12:54 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Mark Hamilton assisted on the tally. Rob Hinschberger also scored for Wellesley. Other players who recorded assists for Wellesley were James Mildon, Chris Bauman, and Matt Sovereign, who each chipped in one.

For Ayr, Redford was ejected from the game. Josh Heer made 44 saves for the Applejacks on 48 shots. Wellesley ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. The Applejacks ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kevin Howorth was ejected from the game.
