Wingham erases deficit to stun Walkerton, 7-5

The Walkerton Hawks could not hold down the Wingham Ironmen, and Ironmen erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 7-5 win.

Wingham let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a three hole to pick up the win. The Ironmen took a 2-1 advantage on a goal by Blair Goss at 2:41 in the second period. Wingham found itself down 5-2 after Walkerton's Jordan Turcotte put the puck home on the power play at 17:47 in the second period. After evening things up at 5-5 on a goal by Aaron Armstrong at 19:00 in the third, the Ironmen got the game-winner from Armstrong at 19:06 in the third period.

After the loss made the series score 3-1 in the best of seven series, the Hawks face elimination next time out.

Armstrong was all over the ice for Wingham, as he tallied two goals and three assists in the win.

The Ironmen forced Walkerton goalie Jeff Flagler to work between the pipes, taking 38 shots. Wingham's goal total was higher than its season average. The Ironmen have scored at the pace of four goals per game during the current campaign. Wingham had trouble staying out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 14 penalty minutes for seven opposing power plays. The leading offender was Wade Stephenson, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

Wingham additionally got points from Travis Donaldson, who also tallied two goals and two assists and Stephenson, who also registered one goal and three assists. Nic Carter also scored for Wingham. In addition, Wingham received assists from Joel Bowman, Justin Jacklin, and Tyler Kellum, who each chipped in one.

The Hawks kept the Ironmen's goalie busy throughout the game, and Jeff Puddephatt made 39 saves on 44 shots. Walkerton got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

The Hawks were helped by Eric Lekun, who grabbed two goals. Lekun scored the first of his two goals at 3:33 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Walkerton. Jay Thomson assisted on the tally. Lekun's next tally made the score 4-2 Walkerton with 12:53 left in the second period. A goalie interference penalty on Graham Ashcroft had put Walkerton on the power play. Andy Mitchell provided the assist. Walkerton also got points from Turcotte, who also had one goal and one assist and Mitchell, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Walkerton got a goal from Andrew Graham as well. Other players who recorded assists for Walkerton were Adam Alexander, who had three and Ryan Stroz and Haden Campbell, who contributed one each.

Wingham registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Jeff Flagler made 31 saves for the Hawks on 38 shots. Walkerton incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
