Belle River beats Wheatley 4-3 after comeback scare

The Belle River Canadiens survived a determined comeback attempt by the Wheatley Sharks on the way to a 4-3 win.

Belle River made the score 4-2 on a goal by Chris DiNatale at 4:51 in the third period, and Wheatley got as close as 4-3 when Kurtis Ouellette scored 17:30 into the third period.

After the loss made the series score 3-0 in the best of seven series, the Sharks face elimination next time out.

The Canadiens' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Belle River finished with 26 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Nik Dobrich, who totaled six minutes in penalty time with three minors.

Belle River got a goal from Dylan Impens as well. Other players who recorded assists for Belle River were Branden Larocque and Blake Jones, who each chipped in one and Keith Maisonville and Scott Chauvin, who contributed two each.

Wheatley kept the Canadiens' goalie busy throughout the game, and Zakk Olvin made 36 saves on 39 shots. The Sharks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 54 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Austin Fontaine, who totaled 12 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one misconduct.

Wheatley was helped by Sebastian Kanally, who racked up two goals. Kanally scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Wheatley. A checking from behind penalty on Donnovan Plummer had put the Sharks on the power play. Trevor Grieve provided the assist. Kanally's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Belle River with 5:47 left in the second period. Dan Matoski picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Wheatley were Brian Johnson, who had one.

Belle River registered three goals on 17 power play opportunities. The Canadiens ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Plummer was ejected from the game. Wheatley's Marc Tremblay stopped 18 shots out of the 22 that he faced. The Sharks registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For Wheatley, Jordan Carnevale was ejected from the game.
