Motor City shrugs off penalties, upends Kalkaska, 5-2

The Motor City Chiefs, which found themselves down a man often, weathered the Kalkaska Roughnecks' power play opportunities and emerged with a 5-2 victory.

Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 18 penalties during the game.

Motor City was paced by Dalton Pennington, who tallied one goal and one assist. Pennington scored 11:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Motor City. Kenneth Winter assisted on the tally.

The Chiefs racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Motor City had been averaging 35 minutes in penalties per game. The Chiefs got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Motor City also got points from Robert Speer, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Winter, who also had one goal and one assist, and Pennington, who also registered one goal and one assist. Motor City got a goal from Lawrence McShane as well. Other players who recorded assists for Motor City were Travis McGuckin, who had two and Anthony Dimarco, Anthony Davey, Thomas Novak, James Smith, and Jonathon Hultgren, who contributed one each.

Kalkaska could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 31 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Alexander Payne, who totaled 19 minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major.

The Roughnecks were helped by Mark Gauthier, who tallied one goal. Gauthier scored 2:17 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Kalkaska. Jared Dagenais picked up the assist. Dugan Kelly also scored for Kalkaska. More assists for Kalkaska came via Zachary Olin, who had one.

Brian Ellis took the win and made 10 saves before being replaced by Keegan McHenry who made 11 saves. Motor City registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Calvin Burkhart made 25 saves for Kalkaska on 30 shots. The Roughnecks registered one goal on six power play opportunities.
