Leamington uses shootout to best Sarnia, 4-3 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Leamington Flyers defeated the Sarnia Legionnaires in a shootout 4-3 (2-1 SO).

The two teams needed six turns to complete the shootout. Sarnia got a shootout goal from Jason Teschke. In addition to the clincher, Leamington got a shootout goal from Alex Seguin.

The Flyers overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Leamington fell behind 3-2 after a goal by the Legionnaires' Nathan Mater at 13:57 in the second period. The Flyers tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Brett Babkirk at 15:36 in the third period.

Leamington was paced by Seguin, who had one goal and one assist. Seguin scored 7:40 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Leamington. Kyle Bowman picked up the assist.

The Flyers forced Sarnia's goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 38 shots and forcing 34 saves. Sean Parker made 23 stops and Kyle Washer made 11. Leamington managed to stay out of the box better than usual, totaling one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Flyers wound up below its season average of 19 penalty minutes per game.

Leamington also got points from Babkirk, who also registered one goal and one assist and Seguin, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jared Dennis also scored for Leamington. More assists for Leamington came via Jake Hopfner, Nicholas Nicodemo, and Dakota Olvin, who contributed one each.

The Legionnaires were led by Jesse Drydak, who racked up one goal and two assists. Drydak scored on the power play 18:03 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Sarnia earned a power play opportunity when Lucas Raffoul was put in the box for high sticking. Teschke assisted on the tally. Sarnia additionally got points from Drydak, who also had one goal and two assists. In addition, Sarnia received assists from Evan Dixon, who had one and Shawn Waldie, who had two.

Darien Ekblad made 24 saves for Leamington on 27 shots. The Flyers registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. The Legionnaires incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
