Port Colborne penalty kill dominates in 5-2 defeat of WellandWelland Arena Sun, Feb 26, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Welland Jr. Canadians failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Port Colborne Pirates shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2. Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 20 penalties during the game. Port Colborne was led by Dima Lavrenov, who racked up one goal and one assist. Lavrenov scored on the power play 15:22 into the third period to make the score 5-2 Port Colborne. The Pirates had gotten the advantage when Welland's Joe Saracini was sent off for roughing. Mark Lucatra provided the assist. Port Colborne's offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 44 shots put on the Jr. Canadians' net. The Pirates were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 20 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Lavrenov, who totaled two minutes in penalty time with one minor. Port Colborne additionally got points from Nick Schiro, who also registered one goal and one assist, Dayne Phillips, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Lavrenov, who also had one goal and one assist. Port Colborne got a goal from Zoran Popel as well. In addition, Port Colborne received assists from Mitchell Pozsonyi and Drake Hart, who each chipped in one and Thomas Sestini and Zach DeConcilys, who contributed two each. Port Colborne was unable to stop Welland from sending pucks towards the net, and the Jr. Canadians eventually piled up 42 shots on goal. Welland found itself short handed often, totaling 50 penalty minutes and allowing 14 power plays. The leading offender was Ryan Migliaccio, who totaled 12 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one misconduct. The Jr. Canadians were helped by Anthony Marra, who tallied two goals. Marra scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:00 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Welland had taken the advantage when the Pirates' Lucatra got sent off for slashing. Brooker Muir assisted on the tally. Marra's next tally on the power play made the score 2-2 with 47 seconds left in the second period. Muir picked up the assist. More assists for Welland came via Matt Vizzari and Mike Marquis, who each chipped in one. Real Cormier turned away 40 pucks between the pipes for Port Colborne. For the Pirates, Michael Sharp was ejected from the game. The Jr. Canadians' Matt Coulombe stopped 39 shots out of the 44 that he faced. Welland registered one goal on seven power play opportunities.
