Welland falls to Thorold in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

The Thorold Blackhawks pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Welland Jr. Canadians on a clutch goal by Robert Bentavegna.

Thorold's penalty kill excelled, as the Blackhawks gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Thorold stifled Welland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop the Blackhawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Thorold eventually piled up 43 shots on goal. The Blackhawks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Dan Chudobiak, who totaled 12 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one misconduct.

Thorold also had goals scored by Tanner Hildebrandt, who had one and Joel Forestell, who had two. Other players who recorded assists for Thorold were Ed Creighton and Tanner Pagendam, who each chipped in one and Anthony Scornaienchi, Mackenzie Mac Avoy, and Greg Cerilli, who contributed two each.

Welland's offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 31 shots put on Thorold's net.

The Jr. Canadians were led by Mike Marquis, who registered one goal and three assists. Marquis scored 3:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland. Brooker Muir provided the assist. Welland additionally got points from Muir, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Welland got a goal from Robbie Lepine as well. In addition, Welland received assists from Anthony Marra, who had two and Colin Isnor and Mack Seebach, who each chipped in one.

Evan Buitenhuis made 27 saves for the Blackhawks on 31 shots. Thorold registered zero goals on zero power play opportunities. Matt Coulombe turned away 38 pucks between the pipes for Welland. The Jr. Canadians incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Welland ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Kevin LaRocque was ejected from the game.
