Elmira holds on for 5-4 win against Guelph

The Guelph Hurricanes tried their best to erase a three-goal deficit, but the Elmira Sugar Kings would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Elmira made the score 5-2 on a goal by Andrew Smith at 14:31 in the third period, and Guelph got as close as 5-4 when Nic MacEachern scored 19:58 into the third period.

Smith had a great game for the Sugar Kings, netting two goals.

The Hurricanes were unable to stop Elmira from sending pucks towards the net, and the Sugar Kings eventually piled up 62 shots on goal. Elmira got its opportunities on the power play, but did not convert any of its nine chances. The Sugar Kings could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 16 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Smith, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

Elmira got a goal from Wade Pfeffer as well. In addition, Elmira received assists from Brad Kraus, who had two and Brodie Whitehead, Will Cook, Michael Hasson, Brett Priestap, Scott Nagy, Cash Seraphim, and Lukas Baleshta, who contributed one each.

Guelph stifled Elmira's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Hurricanes were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 28 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Chris Taylor, who totaled 12 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one misconduct.

Guelph additionally got points from Mike Iacocca, who also tallied one goal and one assist and MacEachern, who also finished with two goals and two assists. Shane Kinsella also scored for Guelph. More assists for Guelph came via Michael Wilkins, who had one and Mike Charbonneau, who had three.

The Sugar Kings' Nick Horrigan stopped 25 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Colin Furlong recorded 57 saves for Guelph. The Hurricanes registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
