Port Colborne beats St. Catharines 4-2 after comeback scare

The Port Colborne Pirates survived a determined comeback attempt by the St. Catharines Falcons on the way to a 4-2 win.

A goal by Dima Lavrenov put Port Colborne up 4-1 in the second period, but St. Catharines pulled to within two on Curtis Longland's tally 18:41 into the third period.

Charlie Izaguirre had one goal and two assists to lead the Pirates. Izaguirre scored on the power play 17:23 into the first period to make the score 1-1. An interference penalty on Longland had put Port Colborne on the power play. Thomas Sestini picked up the assist.

The Pirates forced Falcons' goaltenders to work between the pipes, getting 33 shots and forcing 29 saves. Michael Gallardi made 16 stops and Josh Rosettani APM made 13. Port Colborne could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.

Dayne Phillips also scored for Port Colborne. More assists for Port Colborne came via James Tyminski, who had two and Nick Schiro and Jordan Warren, who each chipped in one.

The Falcons were often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and one major for 57 minutes in penalty time. St. Catharines had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Falcons did not reach the goal total they have come to expect this season. St. Catharines puts an average of 5.0 pucks into the net per game.

Other players who recorded assists for St. Catharines were Aaron Taylor and Johnson Andrews, who contributed one a piece.

Morgan Hudson recorded 19 saves for the Pirates. Port Colborne registered three goals on 12 power play opportunities. The Falcons registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For St. Catharines, Kenny Bradford and Andrews were ejected from the contest.
