Columbus hangs on, beats Mississippi Surge 2-0

The Columbus Cottonmouths took the lead against Mississippi Surge in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-0 victory.

Sam Bowles provided Columbus with the game-winning tally when he scored 11:08 into the the first period. Peter MacDougall assisted on the tally.

Andrew Loewen spearheaded the defensive effort for the Cottonmouths, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 26 saves for the shutout. Loewen certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.83 entering the contest.

Columbus was paced by Bowles, who tallied one goal.

The Cottonmouths put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Mississippi Surge to score on any of its three power plays. Columbus' defense was surprisingly good. The Cottonmouths allow 2.8 goals per game.

John Sullivan also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Levi Lind, who had one.

Mississippi Surge's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Columbus power plays. Mississippi Surge did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. Mississippi Surge averages 3.0 goals per game. Mississippi Surge put 26 shots on net during the contest, more than the 23.3 it averages per game.

Mississippi Surge was led by Matt Kinnunen, who took five shots.

Columbus incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Kiefer Smiley made 24 saves for Mississippi Surge on 26 shots. Mississippi Surge incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
