Knoxville hangs on, beats Pensacola 2-0

The Knoxville Ice Bears beat the Pensacola Ice Flyers, 2-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Knoxville took over the lead for good with a goal by Kevin Swider at 5:04 in the first period. Emery Olauson assisted on the tally.

The Ice Bears were boosted by Kyle Rank, who turned in a shutout with 33 saves. Rank certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.49 entering the contest.

Knoxville was paced by Swider, who registered one goal.

The Ice Bears stifled Pensacola's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Knoxville was below its usual level of shot production, taking 19 shots compared to the 30.4 the Ice Bears average.

More assists for Knoxville came via Steve Wiedler, Berkley Scott, and Mike Lane, who each chipped in one.

The Ice Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Knoxville to score on any of its three power plays. Pensacola could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Ice Flyers average 3.3 goals per game. The defense for Pensacola played an important role offensively, racking up 14 shots on goal. The Ice Flyers' offense rang up 33 shots on the Ice Bears' net.

Pensacola was led by Tyler Soehner, who took five shots.

Knoxville incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Jesse Kallechy rejected 17 shots on goal for the Ice Flyers. Pensacola incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
