Knoxville squeaks by Huntsville, 5-3

The game between the Knoxville Ice Bears and the Huntsville Havoc was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Knoxville emerged with a 5-3 win.

The Ice Bears gained the winning advantage on a goal by Ricky Helmbrecht 1:20 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

Knoxville got the win thanks to a great game by Emery Olauson, who had one goal and four assists. Olauson scored 9:37 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Knoxville. Kevin Swider assisted on the tally.

The Ice Bears were often in penalty trouble, totaling six minors and five majors for 47 minutes in penalty time. Knoxville had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Ice Bears' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Huntsville power plays. Huntsville was unable to stop Knoxville from sending pucks towards the net, and the Ice Bears eventually piled up 32 shots on goal. Knoxville relied heavily on its defensemen to assist its forwards, and the blueliners responded by scoring three goals on 14 shots.

Steve Wiedler also scored for Knoxville. Other players who recorded assists for Knoxville were Eric Slais and Berkley Scott, who each chipped in one.

The Havoc racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with eight minors and five majors for 61 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville surpassed its season average of 22.0 penalty minutes per game. By firing 29 shots on goal, the Havoc exceeded the 21.4 shots they average per game this year. Huntsville's defensemen bolstered the Havoc's offensive attack, as they bombarded Matt Hache with 13 shots.

Huntsville was led by Justin Fox, who had two goals. Fox scored the first of his two goals at 6:55 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Knoxville. Mike MacDonald picked up the assist. Fox's next tally made the score 4-3 Knoxville with 8:42 left in the third period. Stuart Stefan provided the assist. Huntsville also got a goal from Alex Morton as well. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Colin Reddin and Ray Ortiz, who contributed one a piece.

Hache recorded 26 saves for the Ice Bears. Knoxville registered three goals on six power play opportunities. For the Ice Bears, Brett Valliquette was ejected from the game. Mark Sibbald made 27 saves for the Havoc on 32 shots. Huntsville ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dennis Sicard was ejected from the game.
