Huntsville falls to Mississippi RiverKings after surprising comebackLanders Center Tue, Mar 06, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Mississippi RiverKings climbed out of a three-goal hole to beat the Huntsville Havoc, 6-4. Mississippi RiverKings let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a three hole to pick up the win. Mississippi RiverKings took a 1-0 advantage on a power play goal by Mark Magnowski at 2:21 in the first period. Mississippi RiverKings found itself down 4-1 after Huntsville's Ray Ortiz put the puck home at 15:26 in the second period. After evening things up at 4-4 on a goal by Tanner Hlookoff at 1:22 in the third, Mississippi RiverKings got the game-winner from Darrell Stoddard at 5:14 in the third period. Mississippi RiverKings got the win behind a great game by Matt Whitehead, who had two goals and three assists. Whitehead scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 38 seconds into the third period to make the score 4-2 Huntsville. Kyle Lundale picked up the assist. Whitehead's next tally on the power play made the score 6-4 Mississippi RiverKings with 11:20 left in the third period. Leland Fidler provided the assist. Mississippi RiverKings stifled the Havoc's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Mississippi RiverKings' offense was clicking better than usual and put 30 shots on goal during the game, better than the 24.5 shots per game it averages. Mississippi RiverKings surpassed its usual scoring output this season. Mississippi RiverKings averages 3.0 goals per game. More assists for Mississippi RiverKings came via Nick Vandenbeld and Ken Selby, who each chipped in one. By firing 25 shots on goal, Huntsville exceeded the 21.7 shots it averages per game this year. The Havoc were helped by Scott Duncan, who tallied one goal. Duncan scored 16:16 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Huntsville. Colin Reddin assisted on the tally. Mike MacDonald also scored for Huntsville. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Justin Fox, who had two and Stuart Stefan, Dennis Sicard, and Kyle Crawford, who contributed one a piece. Scott Darling recorded 21 saves for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Huntsville's starting goalie, Mark Sibbald, made 24 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Kevin Beech, who stopped zero shots. The Havoc incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
