Mississippi Surge wins tough contest against Mississippi RiverKings, 5-3

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, Mississippi Surge escaped with a 5-3 victory over Mississippi RiverKings.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Nick Guran's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Mississippi Surge got the win thanks to a great game by Guran, who had two goals and one assist. Guran scored the first of his two goals at 11:04 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Jeff Grant assisted on the tally. Guran's next tally made the score 4-3 Mississippi Surge with 1:02 left in the third period. Colin Reddin picked up the assist.

The Mississippi Surge penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and three majors for 29 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 18.0 minutes per game Mississippi Surge had been spending in the box.

Mississippi Surge additionally got points from Tyler Ruel, who also registered one goal and one assist and Shawn Skelly, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Mississippi Surge also got a goal from Rob Campbell as well. Other players who recorded assists for Mississippi Surge were Mark Pawlowski, who had one and Nick Klaren, who had two.

Mississippi RiverKings was often in penalty trouble, totaling four minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. Mississippi RiverKings had been averaging 17.0 minutes in penalties per game. Mississippi RiverKings' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Mississippi Surge power plays.

Mississippi RiverKings was helped by Ken Selby, who racked up one goal. Selby scored 10:50 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Mississippi RiverKings. Jeff Topilko assisted on the tally. Matt Whitehead also scored for Mississippi RiverKings. In addition, Mississippi RiverKings received assists from Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon, who had one and Kyle Lundale and Chevan Wilson, who contributed two a piece.

Mississippi Surge's Kiefer Smiley stopped 20 shots out of the 23 that he faced. Scott Darling recorded 24 saves for Mississippi RiverKings. Mississippi RiverKings registered two goals on five power play opportunities. For Mississippi RiverKings, Kevin Fukala was ejected from the game.
