Columbus outlasts Pensacola, 3-2

The Columbus Cottonmouths and the Pensacola Ice Flyers were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Columbus made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

Neither team gained more than a one-goal lead, and John Sullivan's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

The Cottonmouths' offense was clicking better than usual and put 29 shots on goal during the game, better than the 23 shots per game they average.

Columbus additionally got points from Sullivan, who also registered one goal and one assist. Columbus got a goal from Levi Lind as well. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Jordan Braid, Orrin Hergott, and Greg Beller, who contributed one each.

Pensacola stifled Columbus' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 33 shots that the Ice Flyers put on net surpassed Pensacola's average of 25 shots per game this season.

The Ice Flyers were led by Matthew Robertson, who tallied two goals. Robertson scored the first of his two goals short handed at 8:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Pensacola. A hooking call on Kevin Brojek put Pensacola on the penalty kill. Ryan Hohl picked up the assist. Robertson's next tally short handed made the score 2-2 with 5:10 left in the second period. The Ice Flyers had gotten the advantage when the Cottonmouths' Peter MacDougall was sent off for high sticking. Chris Wilson assisted on the tally. In addition, Pensacola received assists from Donnie Harris and Tyler Soehner, who each chipped in one.

Ian Vigier turned away 31 pucks between the pipes for Columbus. The Cottonmouths totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play. Corey Milan made 26 saves for Pensacola on 29 shots. The Ice Flyers totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-5 on the power play.
