Mississippi Surge falls to Louisiana after surprising comebackCajundome Fri, Feb 24, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Undaunted by a two-goal deficit, the Louisiana IceGators battled back to claim a 3-2 victory over Mississippi Surge. Louisiana never led in the game until netting the game winner. The IceGators trailed 2-0 after a power play goal by Mississippi Surge's James Isaacs at 2:30 in the second period. Louisiana knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Eric Tallent at 8:20 in the third period. The IceGators got the game winner at 18:36 in the third period on a goal by Tallent. Louisiana was sparked by Shawn McNeil, who registered one goal and one assist. The IceGators forced Mississippi Surge goalie Kiefer Smiley to work between the pipes, taking 33 shots. Louisiana additionally got points from McNeil, who also had one goal and one assist and Tallent, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jordan Oye also scored for Louisiana. More assists for Louisiana came via Josh Boyd, Tyler Fernandez, and August Aiken, who each chipped in one. Mississippi Surge put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Louisiana to score on any of its four power plays. Mississippi Surge's offense was clicking better than usual and put 35 shots on goal during the game, better than the 26 shots per game it averages. Mississippi Surge was helped by Shawn Skelly, who had one goal. Skelly scored 13:19 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge. Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn assisted on the tally. In addition, Mississippi Surge received assists from Scott Jenks and Tyler Ruel, who contributed one each. Dan Earles made 33 saves for the IceGators on 35 shots. Louisiana ended with 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. Smiley recorded 30 saves for Mississippi Surge. Mississippi Surge incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
