Columbus uses shootout to best Augusta, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

The Columbus Cottonmouths and the Augusta RiverHawks both failed to score in overtime, but Columbus won the game 5-4 (2-1 SO) after Jordan Braid's deciding goal in the shootout.

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Augusta got a shootout goal from Brendan Taylor. The Cottonmouths also got a shootout goal from Greg Beller.

Orrin Hergott was all over the ice for Columbus, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Hergott found the back of the net on the power play 13:47 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Columbus and again while 16:32 into the third to make the score 4-4.

The RiverHawks' power play was ineffective against the Cottonmouths' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 20:00 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Columbus racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and two majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 22 minutes per game the Cottonmouths had been spending in the box. Columbus' offense was clicking better than usual and put 30 shots on goal during the game, better than the 24 shots per game it averages. The Cottonmouths were held back by their power play unit, which tallied two goals on nine chances.

Columbus additionally got points from Braid, who also registered one goal and one assist. Beller also scored for Columbus. More assists for Columbus came via Derek Pallardy, who had one and Tom Maldonado, Brett Hammond, and Bret Tyler, who each chipped in two.

Augusta was often in penalty trouble, totaling 10 minors and two majors for 40 minutes in penalty time. The RiverHawks surpassed its season average of 23 penalty minutes per game.

Augusta was helped by Neil Graham, who racked up one goal and one assist. Graham scored on the power play 18:13 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Columbus. The RiverHawks had taken the advantage when Columbus' Kevin Kessler got sent off for roughing. Tyler Fernandez picked up the assist. Augusta also got points from Egor Mironov, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Jim Gehring, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Taylor, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Augusta received assists from Drew Baker, Matt Auffrey, and Ed Snetsinger, who contributed one each.

Andrew Loewen made 21 saves for the Cottonmouths on 25 shots. Columbus ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Daniel Amesbury was ejected from the game. Peter Skoggard recorded 25 saves for Augusta. For the RiverHawks, Kyle Watson was ejected from the game.
