Arizona survives Rapid City comeback, wins 3-2

Rapid City tried its best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Arizona Sundogs would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 3-2.

A goal by Kevin Petovello put Arizona up 2-0 in the first period, but Rapid City pulled to within one on Shawn Limpright's tally 30 seconds into the third period.

Adam Smyth had two goals to lead the Sundogs to victory. Smyth found the back of the net 8:11 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Arizona and again while 9:55 into the third to make the score 3-2 Arizona.

Arizona relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Luke Erickson, Tyler Butler and Smyth took 16 of the team's 25 shots.

More assists for Arizona came via Nathan ONabigon, who had two and Steve Kaunisto, Kyle Hood, and Jean-Philipp Chabot, who contributed one a piece.

Rapid City excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. By firing 25 shots on goal, Rapid City exceeded the 22.2 shots it averages per game this year. Rapid City was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 26 penalty minutes.

Other players who recorded assists for Rapid City were Riley Weselowski, Collin Circelli, Scott Wray, and Jake Morissette, who each chipped in one.

Scott Reid recorded 23 saves for the Sundogs. Arizona incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Rapid City took out Tim Boron after he had made eight saves and installed Kevin Beech in goal, where he finished with 14 saves and the loss. Rapid City registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For Rapid City, Dominic DAmour was ejected from the game.
