Wichita holds on for 6-5 win against Texas

The Wichita Thunder survived a determined comeback attempt by the Texas Brahmas on the way to a 6-5 win.

Wichita made the score 6-4 on a goal by Alex Bourret at 6:16 in the third period, and Texas got as close as 6-5 when Dan Nicholls scored 19:25 into the third period.

The Thunder outdid their season average for goals scored. This season, Wichita averages 3.6 goals per contest. The Thunder was effective with a man advantage, and put in two goals while on the power play. Wichita found itself short handed often, totaling 38 penalty minutes and allowing eight power plays.

The Thunder were led by RG Flath, who had three goals and one assist. Wichita also got a goal from Chris Chappell as well. More assists for Wichita came via Thomas Beauregard, who had two, Jarred Mohr, who had three, and Daniel Tetrault, Matt Robinson, and Matt Summers, who each chipped in one.

The 26 shots that the Brahmas put on net surpassed Texas' average of 21.3 shots per game this season. The Brahmas surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Texas averages 2.6 goals per game. The Brahmas' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Texas is averaging 2.5 goals against for the season.

The Brahmas were led by Adam Hogg, who tallied two goals and one assist. Hogg scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:48 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Wichita. Texas had gotten the advantage when Wichita's Flath was sent off for slashing. Erik Spady provided the assist. Hogg's next tally on the power play made the score 4-4 with 7:44 left in the second period. Ross Rouleau assisted on the tally. Texas also got points from Sy Nutkevitch, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Brendon Hodge also scored for Texas. Other players who recorded assists for Texas were Gregg Eskedjian, who had one and TJ Fox, who had two.

Adam Russo recorded 21 saves for the Thunder. For Wichita, Bourret was ejected from the game. The Brahmas' starting goalie, Mark Guggenberger, made 17 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Ken Carroll, who stopped two shots. Texas incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
