Evansville vanquishes Fort Wayne in shootout, 4-3 (2-1 SO)

Sean OConnor scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Evansville IceMen picked up the extra point in a 4-3 (2-1 SO) win over the Fort Wayne Komets.

The shootout featured 10 attempts between both teams. Fort Wayne's shootout goal was scored by Jean-Michel Rizk. In addition to the clincher, Evansville got a shootout goal from John Ronan.

The IceMen overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Evansville was down 3-1 after a goal by the Komets' Bobby Chaumont at 7:05 in the third period. The IceMen tied things up at 3-3 on a goal by Philippe Plante at 19:39 in the third period.

In the losing effort, Fort Wayne was led by Chaumont, who registered two goals. Chaumont scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 7:31 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Fort Wayne. The Komets had gained a power play chance when Steve Makway was whistled for cross checking. Brett Smith assisted on the tally. Chaumont's next tally on the power play made the score Fort Wayne with 12:55 left in the third period. Smith picked up the assist.

Evansville relied heavily on its defensemen to assist its forwards, and the blueliners responded by scoring two goals on 17 shots. By firing 41 shots on goal, the IceMen exceeded the 27.4 shots they average per game this year.

Evansville also got points from Matt Gens, who also had one goal and one assist. Ronan also scored for Evansville. Other players who recorded assists for Evansville were Todd Robinson, who had two and Karl Linden and Matt Pierce, who contributed one a piece.

Fort Wayne forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and two majors for 30 minutes in penalty time. The Komets had been averaging 19.0 minutes in penalties per game. Fort Wayne stifled Evansville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Komets put 39 shots on net during the contest, more than the 34.4 they average per game.

Fort Wayne also got a goal from Leo Thomas as well. In addition, Fort Wayne received assists from Jamie Lovell, Jamie Milam, and Colin Chaulk, who each chipped in one.

Bryan Gillis recorded 36 saves for the IceMen. Evansville totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 0-for-5 on the power play. Nick Boucher rejected 37 shots on goal for Fort Wayne. The Komets registered two goals on four power play opportunities.
