Evansville beats Tulsa, 4-1 in penalty-filled game

The Evansville IceMen took down the Tulsa Oilers, 4-1, in a game characterized by a plethora of penalties on both sides.

Evansville was sparked by Josh Beaulieu, who had one goal and one assist. Beaulieu scored 2:07 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Evansville. Todd Robinson assisted on the tally.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 16:15 into the third period. Six fighting penalties were dished out along with five game misconducts.

Both goalies were tossed from the game during the major incident in the third period.

The IceMen were often in penalty trouble, totaling seven minors and four majors for 84 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 20 minutes per game Evansville had been spending in the box. The IceMen's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Tulsa power plays. Evansville relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Brian Bicek, Matt Gens and Beaulieu took 14 of the team's 27 shots.

Evansville additionally got points from Robinson, who also racked up one goal and one assist. More assists for Evansville came via John Ronan, Matt Pierce, and Malcolm Gwilliam, who each chipped in one.

Tulsa forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. The Oilers surpassed its season average of 15 penalty minutes per game. Tulsa stifled the IceMen's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Oilers could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Tulsa averages three goals per game. The Oilers' defensemen bolstered Tulsa's offensive attack, as they bombarded Pier-Olivier Pelletier with 11 shots.

The Oilers were led by Jason Weeks, who scored the team's only goal. Weeks scored 11:38 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Evansville. Troy Ofukany picked up the assist.

Pelletier turned away 23 pucks between the pipes for Evansville. The IceMen registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Mike Sgroi, Mark Cody, Steve Makway, and Pelletier were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Ian Keserich recorded 23 saves for Tulsa. The Oilers ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Keserich was ejected from the game.
