Arizona vanquishes Bloomington in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Kevin Petovello scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Arizona Sundogs picked up the extra point in a 5-4 (2-1 SO) win over the Bloomington Blaze.

The shootout featured 12 attempts between both teams. Bloomington's shootout goal was scored by Brodie Sheahan. Arizona's other shootout goal was scored by Craig Macdonald.

The Sundogs came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Arizona trailed 4-3 after a goal by the Blaze's Jason Dale at 14:23 in the third period. The Sundogs knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Macdonald at 19:24 in the third period.

Arizona put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Bloomington to score on any of its six power plays. The Sundogs' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Arizona averages two goals per contest. The Sundogs were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 16 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Daymen Rycroft, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

Arizona additionally got points from Macdonald, who also had three goals and one assist. Arizona got a goal from Adam Smyth as well. More assists for Arizona came via Jean-Philipp Chabot, who had two and Steve Kaunisto, Samson Mahbod, Luke Erickson, Tyler Matheson, and Olivier Proulx, who each chipped in one.

The Blaze's offense was clicking better than usual and put 36 shots on goal during the game, better than the 30 shots per game they average. Bloomington had trouble staying out of the sin bin throughout the game as it finished the game with 22 penalty minutes for nine opposing power plays. The leading offender was Jon Booras, who totaled four minutes in penalty time with two minors.

The Blaze were led by Luke Popko, who racked up one goal and one assist. Popko scored 2:24 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Bloomington. Omar Pacha picked up the assist. Sheahan also scored for Bloomington. In addition, Bloomington received assists from Vladimir Nikiforov, Travis Granbois, and Kyle Laughlin, who contributed one each.

Mike Spillane recorded 32 saves for Arizona. Bloomington's Zane Kalemba stopped 24 shots out of the 28 that he faced.
