Hampton Roads Whalers downs Atlanta Knights in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

Taylor Paasch gave Hampton Roads Whalers a 5-4 (OT) victory over Atlanta Knights when he scored 4:25 into the extra period.

 

Hampton Roads Whalers overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Hampton Roads Whalers fell behind 4-2 after a goal by Atlanta Knights' Brandon Harley at 11:09 in the third period. Hampton Roads Whalers tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Alexander Dempsey at 19:04 in the third period.

Nicholas Kujawa was all over the ice for Hampton Roads Whalers, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Kujawa scored the first of his two goals at 12:05 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Atlanta Knights. Paasch provided the assist. Kujawa's next tally made the score 4-3 Atlanta Knights with 2:55 left in the third period. Keegan Howver assisted on the tally.

Atlanta Knights was unable to stop Hampton Roads Whalers from sending pucks towards the net, and Hampton Roads Whalers eventually piled up 50 shots on goal.

Hampton Roads Whalers additionally got points from Paasch, who also racked up one goal and two assists and Dempsey, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. In addition, Hampton Roads Whalers received assists from Jonathon Jones and Jackson Braniff, who contributed one each.

Atlanta Knights put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Hampton Roads Whalers to score on any of its seven power plays. Atlanta Knights forced Hampton Roads Whalers goalie Holden Melgoza to work between the pipes, taking 48 shots. Atlanta Knights' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Atlanta Knights gives up two goals per game. Atlanta Knights could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Ryan Griggs, who totaled 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one misconduct.

Atlanta Knights also got points from Moco Willis, who also registered one goal and two assists. Steven Patafio also scored for Atlanta Knights. More assists for Atlanta Knights came via Michael Falkenstein, who had one and Boris Knyazev, who had two.

Melgoza recorded 44 saves for Hampton Roads Whalers. Hampton Roads Whalers incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Zachary Voskamp made 45 saves for Atlanta Knights on 50 shots. Atlanta Knights registered one goal on four power play opportunities.
