Topeka hangs on, beats Odessa 3-1

Sean Gaffney scored the go-ahead goal in the first period, and the Topeka RoadRunners held off the challenges of the Odessa Jackalopes in a tough 3-1 win.

Gaffney provided Topeka with the game-winning tally when he scored 16:53 into the the first period. Trace Strahle assisted on the tally.

The RoadRunners were paced by Jake Lynes, who tallied one goal. Lynes scored 2:36 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Topeka.

Topeka put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Odessa to score on any of its four power plays.

Topeka also got a goal from Brian Christie as well. Other players who recorded assists for Topeka were Anders Schultz, who had one and Ben Bahe, who had two.

The Jackalopes did not challenge the opposing goaltender, ripping only 10 shots on net to force nine saves. The shot total fell below Odessa's season average of 23.9 shots per game. The Jackalopes' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on six Topeka power plays.

Odessa was led by Darren Lapic, who scored the team's only goal. Lapic scored 19:31 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Topeka. Taylor Portner picked up the assist.

The RoadRunners' starting goalie, Peter Traber, made seven saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Collin LeMay, who stopped two shots. Topeka incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Justin Davis made 21 saves for the Jackalopes on 23 shots. Odessa incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
