Kenai River uses shootout to best Alaska, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Alaska Avalanche in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams. Alaska's shootout goal was scored by Jeff Bergh. In addition to the clincher, Kenai River got a shootout goal from Anthony Stempin.

The Brown Bears overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Kenai River fell behind 4-2 after a power play goal by the Avalanche's Evan Janssen at 1:05 in the third period. The Brown Bears tied things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Sean Muller at 18:26 in the third period.

Kenai River was led by Muller, who racked up one goal.

Team could not crack Alaska's penalty kill and was held to one power play goal while having 11 opportunities to play with the man advantage. The Brown Bears' defensemen bolstered Kenai River's offensive attack, as they bombarded Bodhi Engum with 14 shots. The Brown Bears put 34 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.0 they average per game. Kenai River's penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as the Brown Bears finished with 38 penalty minutes.

Kenai River additionally got points from Jesse Ramsey, who also had one goal and one assist and Chris Blessing, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Stempin also scored for Kenai River. More assists for Kenai River came via Vincent Stefan, Brett Lubanski, Chris Nuth, Dominic Granato, Bobby Murphy, and Marek Hemsky, who contributed one a piece.

By firing 43 shots on goal, the Avalanche exceeded the 25.7 shots they average per game this year. Alaska was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 30 penalty minutes.

The Avalanche were helped by Evan Hesse, who racked up two goals. Hesse scored the first of his two goals at 5:33 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Connor Wright picked up the assist. Hesse's next tally made the score 2-1 Alaska with 11:49 left in the second period. Alaska had gotten the advantage when Kenai River's Lubanski was sent off for slashing. Codey Hansen assisted on the tally. Alaska also got points from Gage Christianson, who also tallied one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Other players who recorded assists for Alaska were Brandon Brossoit, Patrick Kinkopf, Joe Schmitz, and Jesse Kessler, who each chipped in one.

Austin Severson made 39 saves for the Brown Bears on 43 shots. Engum rejected 29 shots on goal for the Avalanche. Alaska registered two goals on nine power play opportunities.
