Fairbanks holds on for 6-5 win against Dawson Creek

The Dawson Creek Rage tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Fairbanks Ice Dogs held on for a 6-5 victory.

A goal by Rudy Sulmonde put Fairbanks up 5-3 in the third period, but Dawson Creek pulled to within one on Shawn Mueller's tally 13:22 into the third period.

The Ice Dogs managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. Fairbanks finished below its season average of 15.0 penalty minutes per game. The Ice Dogs' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Fairbanks averages 3.8 goals per contest. With 40 shots on target during the contest, the Ice Dogs exceeded the 22.3 shots they average per game this year.

Fairbanks was helped by JT Osborn, who tallied three goals. Fairbanks also got points from Sulmonde, who also finished with two goals and one assist. Max Birkinbine also scored for Fairbanks. Other players who recorded assists for Fairbanks were Anton Racklin, who had two, Gabe Levin, who had three, Sean ORourke, who had four, and Doug Rose and Tayler Munson, who contributed one a piece.

The Rage outdid their season average for goals scored. Dawson Creek averages 2.3 goals per game. The Rage relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Ryan Matthews, Scott Fellnermayr and Carter Page took nine of the team's 17 shots.

Dawson Creek additionally got points from Fellnermayr, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Tyson McCallum, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. More assists for Dawson Creek came via Drew Nikirk, who had two and Luke Ripley and Brett Zarazun, who contributed one a piece.

Steve Perry made 12 saves for the Ice Dogs on 17 shots. Fairbanks registered one goal on three power play opportunities. Paul Bourbeau rejected 34 shots on goal for Dawson Creek. The Rage incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
