Coulee Region outlasts Austin, 5-3Omni Center Sun, Mar 18, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Coulee Region Chill escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Austin Bruins. Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Myles Maltz secured the win for Coulee Region with a goal in the third period. Chris Hughes was all over the ice for the Chill, as he tallied two goals in the win. Hughes found the back of the net 15:32 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Austin and again while 9:02 into the third to make the score 4-2 Coulee Region. Coulee Region surpassed its usual scoring output this season. This season, the Chill average 2.7 goals per contest. The 44 shots that Coulee Region put on net surpassed the Chill's average of 24.8 shots per game this season. Coulee Region also got a goal from Mac Jansen as well. Other players who recorded assists for Coulee Region were Adam Thomas, Patrick Steinhauser, and James Hughes, who each chipped in one and Cory Lushanko and Jake Useldinger, who contributed two a piece. Austin's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 18 shots on net during the game. By firing 43 shots on goal, the Bruins exceeded the 26.3 shots they average per game this year. Austin was led by John Simonson, who grabbed two goals and one assist. Simonson scored the first of his two goals at 13:36 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Austin. CJ Smith assisted on the tally. Simonson's next tally made the score 4-3 Coulee Region with 1:36 left in the third period. In addition, Austin received assists from Kody Reuter, who had one. David Heflin recorded 40 saves for Coulee Region. The Chill incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Bruins' Tyler Bruggeman stopped 39 shots out of the 43 that he faced. Austin incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
