Kenai River erases deficit to stun Fresno, 5-4Soldotna Sports Center Wed, Mar 14, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Undaunted by a two-goal deficit, the Kenai River Brown Bears battled back to claim a 5-4 victory over the Fresno Monsters. Kenai River let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Brown Bears took a 2-1 advantage on a power play goal by Chris Blessing at 10:16 in the first period. Kenai River found itself down 4-2 after Fresno's Jesse Durfee put the puck home at 5:51 in the third period. After evening things up at 4-4 on a goal by Jesse Ramsey at 15:18 in the third, the Brown Bears got the game-winner from Raymond Stenehjem at 17:09 in the third period. With two goals and five assists between them, Brett Lubanski and Blessing teamed up to power Kenai River's offense. Lubanski racked up one goal and three assists and Blessing also notched one goal and two assists. The 30 shots that the Brown Bears put on net surpassed Kenai River's average of 23.0 shots per game this season. The Brown Bears' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Kenai River also got a goal from Conor Deal as well. In addition, Kenai River received assists from Kellen Patrick, Sean Muller, and Zac Lazzaro, who contributed one a piece. With 23 shots on target during the contest, the Monsters exceeded the 19.2 shots they average per game this year. Fresno could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game. The Monsters were led by Luke Sandler, who tallied two goals. Sandler scored the first of his two goals at 35 seconds into the second period to make the score 2-2. Ryan Doner picked up the assist. Sandler's next tally made the score 3-2 Fresno with 16:36 left in the third period. Jeffrey Pauluk assisted on the tally. Mikhail Bushinski also scored for Fresno. Other players who recorded assists for Fresno were Mark Bittner, Jordan Haskell, and Brendan Bradley, who each chipped in one. Austin Severson made 19 saves for Kenai River on 23 shots. The Brown Bears incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Tomas Sholl rejected 25 shots on goal for Fresno. The Monsters registered zero goals on two power play opportunities.
