Odessa beats Wichita Falls 5-4 after comeback scare

The Wichita Falls Wildcats tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Odessa Jackalopes held on for a 5-4 victory.

A goal by Alex Ostrowski put Odessa up 3-1 in the second period, but Wichita Falls pulled to within one on Nick Szopinski's tally 2:21 into the third period.

Ryan Doucet was all over the ice for the Jackalopes, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Doucet scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:34 into the third period to make the score 4-3 Odessa. Odessa had gained a power play chance when Renato Engler was whistled for checking from behind. Jared Docken picked up the assist. Doucet's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Odessa with 2:08 left in the third period. Lawrence Cornellier provided the assist.

The Jackalopes stifled the Wildcats' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Odessa put 25 shots on net during the contest, more than the 22.1 it averages per game. The Jackalopes found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Odessa averages 2.5 goals per contest.

Odessa also got a goal from Josh Obregon as well. In addition, Odessa received assists from Jalen Krogman, who had two and Brandon Gorges, Tyler Minx, Zach Mertes, Tyler Cayemberg, and Tyller Robert, who each chipped in one.

With 27 shots on target during the contest, Wichita Falls exceeded the 23.6 shots it averages per game this year.

The Wildcats were helped by Jason Eddy, who registered one goal. Eddy scored 5:02 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Szopinski assisted on the tally. Wichita Falls also got points from Tucker Poolman, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Zach Pochiro also scored for Wichita Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Wichita Falls were Tyler Hope, Jakob Batcha, and Coner Doran, who contributed one a piece.

The Jackalopes' Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Odessa totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Matt Leon made 17 saves before being replaced by Jo Jo Jeanetta, who took the loss and made three saves. Wichita Falls totaled 25 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 0-for-4 on the power play.
