Michigan falls apart in second, loses to Toledo, 10-4Farmington Hills A Sat, Mar 10, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Toledo Cherokee used a five-goal second period to put away the Michigan Mountain Cats, 10-4. Toledo was paced on offense by Joe Skrzynski and Patrick Smiatacz, who combined for seven points. Skrzynski had two goals and two assists and Smiatacz also notched two goals and one assist. Michigan's six penalties came back to haunt it, as the Mountain Cats let up five goals while on the penalty kill. The Cherokee forced Mountain Cats' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, launching 59 shots and forcing 49 saves. Dylan Martin made 15 stops and Schuyler Ferguson made 34. Toledo found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Cherokee average 4.3 goals per contest. Toledo also got points from Austin Fletcher, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Ryan Kelly, who also registered two goals and one assist, and Mareks Kepals, who also had one goal and one assist. Toledo also got a goal from James Steele as well. In addition, Toledo received assists from Charles Kingston, Ben Henry, and Donnie Nagle, who each chipped in one and Mike Baker and Gary Neill, who contributed two a piece. Michigan kept Toledo's goalie busy throughout the game, and Austyn Roudebush made 46 saves on 50 shots. The Mountain Cats were led by James Koonce, who finished with two goals and one assist. Koonce scored the first of his two goals at 6:26 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Michigan. Andrew Carlson picked up the assist. Koonce's next tally made the score 2-2 with 18:40 left in the second period. John Arms also scored for Michigan. Other players who recorded assists for Michigan were Roy Weir, Erick Chamberlain, Tyler Schofield, and Marshall Helton, who each chipped in one. The Cherokee incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Michigan incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
