Toledo uses early goal to top Flint, 4-2

The Toledo Cherokee took the lead against the Flint Jr. Generals in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 4-2 victory.

Toledo took over the lead for good with a goal by Austin Fletcher at 8:12 in the first period. Ben Henry assisted on the tally.

The Cherokee were led by Mike Baker, who registered one goal and one assist. Baker scored 17:05 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Toledo. Ryan Quigley picked up the assist.

Toledo put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Flint to score on any of its five power plays.

Toledo additionally got points from Ryan Kelly, who also had one goal and one assist. Toledo also got a goal from Mareks Kepals as well. More assists for Toledo came via Charles Kingston, Andrew Benyo, Patrick Smiatacz, and Donnie Nagle, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Generals were held below their usual level of production. Flint puts an average of 4.3 pucks into the net per game. The Jr. Generals kept the Cherokee's goalie busy throughout the game, and Lukas Gavalier made 36 saves on 38 shots. Flint was hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time.

The Jr. Generals were helped by Richard Jansson, who racked up one goal. Jansson scored 15:09 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Toledo. Cody Damon assisted on the tally. Derek Compeau also scored for Flint. In addition, Flint received assists from Anthony Terzo, Jacob Bearss, and Andrew Lay, who contributed one a piece.

Toledo totaled 35 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-7 on the power play. Benjamin Myers rejected 22 shots on goal for Flint.
