Minnesota falls apart in second, loses to Granite City, 5-0

The Granite City Lumberjacks used a three-goal second period to put away the Minnesota Flying Aces, 5-0.

Granite City got the win on the strength of a great game by Zac Sikich, who had two goals and one assist. Sikich scored the first of his two goals at 12:16 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Granite City. Nick LaRue picked up the assist. Sikich's next tally made the score 4-0 Granite City with 9:27 left in the second period. DJ Vold provided the assist.

The Lumberjacks stifled Minnesota's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Granite City was steadier on the defensive front than it has been for much of this season. The Lumberjacks average two goals allowed per game. Granite City forced the Flying Aces goalie Tyler Muehler to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots.

Granite City also got points from Sikich, who also had two goals and one assist. Granite City also had goals scored by TJ Christenson, who had one and Riley Bengtson, who had two. More assists for Granite City came via Matt Raiola, Peter Lindblad, Isaac Hoagland, Tyler Stoller, Trevor Ness, and Kyle Castle, who each chipped in one.

Minnesota was held below its usual level of production. The Flying Aces average three goals per game.

The Lumberjacks' Matt Grove stopped 18 shots out of the 18 that he faced. Granite City incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Muehler turned away 31 pucks between the pipes for Minnesota. The Flying Aces incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
