Vecchio leads Pittsburgh over Michigan, 6-3

The Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins' Nico Vecchio had a big offensive game, scoring one goal and contributing two assists in his team's 6-3 win over the Michigan Mountain Cats.

Vecchio scored on the power play 10:37 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Pittsburgh. Michigan had taken the advantage when Pittsburgh's Michael Straub got sent off for cross checking. David Salazar assisted on the tally. James Koonce dished an assist on Josh Foster's goal that made the score 2-1 Michigan at 17:45 into the second period.

In the losing effort, the Mountain Cats were sparked by Koonce, who had two goals and one assist. Koonce scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:46 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Salazar provided the assist. Koonce's next tally on the power play made the score 3-1 Michigan with 2:09 left in the second period.

Pittsburgh also got points from Bryan Hovanec, who also registered one goal and one assist and Alexander Lysyuk, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Alex Berardinelli also scored for Pittsburgh. Other players who recorded assists for Pittsburgh were Stephen Shirk, who had two and David Mnatsyan and Ethan Martin, who contributed one each.

Michigan's offense was handcuffed by the Jr. Penguins' defensive play, and the Mountain Cats managed only 14 shots on goal during the game. Michigan could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 26 minutes in penalties during the game. The leading offender was Koonce, who totaled 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors and a game misconduct.

In addition, Michigan received assists from Tyler Schofield, who had one.

Reid Daniels recorded 11 saves for Pittsburgh. The Jr. Penguins incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Mountain Cats' Jordan Wood stopped 22 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Michigan registered three goals on seven power play opportunities. For the Mountain Cats, Koonce was ejected from the game.
