Alaska downs Kenai River in overtime, 4-3 (OT)MTA Events Center Fri, Feb 24, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Alaska Avalanche pulled out a 4-3 (OT) overtime victory over the Kenai River Brown Bears on a clutch goal by Tanner Fahlstedt. Alaska nearly gave up a two-score lead. The Avalanche made it 3-1 on a goal by Joe Schmitz at 11:59 in the second period. Kenai River got to within 3-2 on a goal by Miikael Arkimo at 16:10 in the third period. Alaska was led by Fahlstedt, who had one goal. Fahlstedt scored 29 seconds into overtime to make the score 4-3 Alaska. Schmitz assisted on the tally. The Avalanche put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Brown Bears to score on any of their five power plays. Alaska additionally got points from Gage Christianson, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Schmitz, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Wehebe Darge also scored for Alaska. In addition, Alaska received assists from Mitch Kontny, Evan Janssen, Cody Bisbing, Casey Nelson, Codey Hansen, and Jeff Bergh, who contributed one a piece. Kenai River stifled Alaska's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Brown Bears failed to reach their usual level of shot production, putting 21 pucks on goal after averaging 26.4 shots per game this season. Kenai River's offense was helped by the efforts of its defensemen, who managed to put 12 shots on net during the game. The Brown Bears were helped by Marek Hemsky, who tallied one goal. Hemsky scored 16:36 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Raymond Stenehjem provided the assist. Kenai River also got points from Brett Lubanski, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Kenai River came via Vincent Stefan, Ryan Walker, and Kellen Wasell, who each chipped in one. Nick Kulmanovsky recorded 18 saves for the Avalanche. Alaska incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Kenai River took out Gabe Grunwald after he had made 14 saves and installed Austin Severson in goal, where he finished with nine saves and the otl. The Brown Bears incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
