GAME RECAP

Amarillo holds on for 3-2 win against Texas

CC-Arena    Sat, Feb 11, 2012

The Texas Tornado tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Amarillo Bulls held on for a 3-2 victory.

A goal by Brooks Behling put Amarillo up 3-1 in the third period, but Texas pulled to within one on Jake Strzalkowski's tally 13:35 into the third period.

The Tornado's power play was ineffective against the Bulls' penalty kill, which allowed zero goals while shorthanded.

Amarillo racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 10 minors and one major for 45 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26.0 minutes per game the Bulls had been spending in the box. Amarillo excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in eight chances. The Bulls average 36.6 shots on goal per game, but only sent 24 pucks on net against Texas.

Amarillo also got points from Greg Gibson, who also racked up one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Brandon Lubin also scored for Amarillo. More assists for Amarillo came via Clint Carlisle, who had two and Mike Erickson and Luke Jenkins, who each chipped in one.

The Tornado stifled Amarillo's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Texas relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Jack Prince, Taylor Herndon and Jordan Greenberg took 22 of the team's 41 shots.

Texas also got a goal from Mitchell McPherson as well. In addition, Texas received assists from Drew Allen, TJ Stuntz, Justin Greenberg, and Drew Mayer, who contributed one a piece.

Gregg Gruehl recorded 39 saves for the Bulls. Amarillo registered zero goals on four power play opportunities. Frederick Leisner rejected 21 shots on goal for the Tornado. Texas ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major.
