Fairbanks beats Dawson Creek 6-4 as Birkinbine gets hat trickEncana Events Center Sat, Feb 11, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
The Dawson Creek Rage could not stop the Fairbanks Ice Dogs' Max Birkinbine, who tallied a hat trick in a 6-4 win. Birkinbine notched his first tally 1:45 into the first period. He then added goals at 7:23 into the second and at 1:46 into the third.Fairbanks forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17 minutes per game the Ice Dogs had been spending in the box. Fairbanks found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Ice Dogs average three goals per contest. Fairbanks struggled on the penalty kill, allowing Dawson Creek to score three power play goals on five chances. The Ice Dogs relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Birkinbine, Jeff Earnest and Alec Hajdukovich took 24 of the team's 38 shots. The Rage put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Fairbanks to score on any of its three power plays. Dawson Creek's offense was clicking better than usual and put 32 shots on goal during the game, better than the 21 shots per game it averages. Fairbanks got a goal from Tayler Munson as well. Other players who recorded assists for Fairbanks were Pavlo Padakin, who had three, Russell Finch, Doug Rose, Garret Clemment, and JT Osborn, who each chipped in one, and Pete Spratte and Gabe Levin, who contributed two each. The Rage were helped by Carter Page, who grabbed one goal. Page scored on the power play 15:33 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Dawson Creek had gained a power play chance when Munson was whistled for slashing. Shawn Mueller picked up the assist. Ryan Matthews also scored for Dawson Creek. More assists for Dawson Creek came via Josh Hartley, who had two and Evan Ripley, Keenan Bailey, Tyson McCallum, and Brett Zarazun, who each chipped in one. The Rage stifled the Ice Dogs' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Dawson Creek got a goal from Matthews as well. Other players who recorded assists for Dawson Creek were. Munson also scored for Fairbanks. More assists for Fairbanks came via. Steve Perry made 28 saves for Fairbanks on 32 shots. Edward Dyson recorded 32 saves for Dawson Creek. The Rage ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major.
