New Mexico wins tough contest against Wenatchee, 3-2Santa Ana Star Center Wed, Mar 16, 2011 Story by Narrative Science.
The New Mexico Mustangs gutted out a close 3-2 win against the Wenatchee Wild. Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Adam Chapie secured the win for New Mexico with a goal in the second period. The Mustangs were sparked by Chapie, who grabbed one goal. Chapie scored 13:44 into the second period to make the score 3-2 New Mexico. Rob Heath provided the assist. By firing 24 shots on goal, New Mexico exceeded the 21.6 shots it averages per game this year. New Mexico also got a goal from Christian Merritt as well. More assists for New Mexico came via Eli Riddle, Michael La Frenier, Kalin Paul, Patrick Anderson, and Christian Johnson, who each chipped in one. Wenatchee relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Ben Carey, Evan Schmidbauer and Michael Di Puma took 12 of the team's 23 shots. The Wild were helped by Carl-Johan Sjogren, who finished with one goal. Sjogren scored 14:48 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Max McHugh assisted on the tally. Jacob Barber also scored for Wenatchee. Other players who recorded assists for Wenatchee were DJ Vandercook, Mario Puskarich, and Cody Von Rueden, who contributed one a piece. Lukas Hernandez recorded 21 saves for the Mustangs. New Mexico incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Greg Lewis made 21 saves for Wenatchee on 24 shots. The Wild incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
