Texas completes comeback, beats Amarillo, 3-2

CC-Arena    Fri, Oct 08, 2010

The Amarillo Bulls could not hold down the Texas Tornado, and Tornado erased a two-goal deficit en route to a 3-2 win.

Texas never led in the game until netting the game winner. The Tornado was down 2-0 after a goal by Amarillo's Luke Jenkins at 11:48 in the first period. Texas tied things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by Rock Einersen at 14:00 in the second period. The Tornado scored the game winner at 8:23 in the third period on a goal by Einersen.

Texas was led by Marc Biggs, who grabbed one goal.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:11 into the second period. Eleven fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts.

The Tornado forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up four minors and three majors for 53 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game Texas had been spending in the box. The Tornado stifled the Bulls' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Texas relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Donald Olivieri, Einersen and Jack Prince took 24 of the team's 45 shots.

More assists for Texas came via Tyler Mort, who had two and Taylor Herndon and Ralfs Freibergs, who contributed one a piece.

Amarillo racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 12 minors and three majors for 69 minutes in penalty time. The Bulls had been averaging 28.0 minutes in penalties per game. By firing 30 shots on goal, Amarillo exceeded the 24.2 shots it averages per game this year.

Amarillo also got a goal from Joe Kozlak as well. In addition, Amarillo received assists from Mitch Rogge and TJ Sarcona, who each chipped in one.

Jimmy Kruger rejected 28 shots on goal for the Tornado. Texas registered two goals on 12 power play opportunities. Team's Joe Mottiqua and Evan Wilson were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. The Bulls' Nikifor Szczerba stopped 42 shots out of the 45 that he faced. Amarillo registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. For the Bulls, Mike Erickson, Taylor Ward, and Shawn Serapilia were ejected from the contest.
