Fayetteville penalty kill dominates in 6-3 defeat of KnoxvilleKnoxville Civic Coliseum Fri, Feb 19, 2010 Story by Narrative Science.
The Knoxville Ice Bears failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Fayetteville FireAntz shook off a number of penalties to win, 6-3. The Fayetteville penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The FireAntz had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. Fayetteville stifled Knoxville's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The FireAntz average 34.1 shots on goal per game, but only sent 21 pucks on net against the Ice Bears. Fayetteville's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. The FireAntz were helped by Lawne Snyder, who grabbed two goals. Snyder scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fayetteville. Fayetteville earned a power play opportunity when Travis Martell was put in the box for hooking. Emery Olauson assisted on the tally. Snyder's next tally on the power play made the score 4-1 Fayetteville with 10:07 left in the second period. Steve Cooke provided the assist. Fayetteville additionally got points from Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Chris Leveille, who also tallied one goal and one assist, and Robert Sich, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Brett Needham also scored for Fayetteville. More assists for Fayetteville came via Jesse Biduke and Craig Geerlinks, who contributed two a piece. Knoxville's offense was clicking better than usual and put 36 shots on goal during the game, better than the 31.6 shots per game it averages. The Ice Bears were led by Mark Van Vliet, who registered one goal and two assists. Van Vliet scored 16:04 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Fayetteville. Kevin Swider assisted on the tally. Knoxville also got points from Tim Vitek, who also had one goal and one assist. Knoxville also got a goal from Mike Kneeland as well. Guy St Vincent made 33 saves for the FireAntz on 36 shots. Fayetteville registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Chad Collins took the loss and made five saves before being replaced by Dan Earles who made 10 saves. Knoxville totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 0-for-6 on the power play.
