Zultek lifts Mississippi Surge over Knoxville, 6-3

The Mississippi Surge Surge relied on the scoring touch of Matt Zultek, who netted two goals, to beat the Knoxville Ice Bears, 6-3.

Zultek found the back of the net on the power play 9:20 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while on the power play 8:20 into the second to make the score 4-3 Mississippi Surge.

Knoxville fell victim to a deadly Mississippi Surge power play, which ripped the Ice Bears for four goals.

The Surge found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, Mississippi Surge averages 3.8 goals per contest.

Mississippi Surge additionally got points from Matt Larke, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Mississippi Surge also had goals scored by Thomas Boudreau, who had one and Tim Velemirovich, who had two. More assists for Mississippi Surge came via Michael Richard, who had three, Chris Greene and Jack Wolgemuth, who each chipped in one, and Shane Wagner and Chris Ferazzoli, who contributed two a piece.

The Knoxville penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. The Ice Bears had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. Knoxville averages 32.6 shots on goal per game, but only sent 21 pucks on net against the Surge. The Ice Bears' defensemen were a huge part of the offense, scoring two goals and taking nine shots.

Knoxville was led by Kevin Harris, who registered two goals. Harris scored the first of his two goals at 4:19 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Knoxville. Taylor Hustead picked up the assist. Harris' next tally made the score 2-2 with 4:54 left in the first period. The Ice Bears had gotten the advantage when Mississippi Surge's Wagner was sent off for tripping. Kevin Swider assisted on the tally. Mike Bulawka also scored for Knoxville. Other players who recorded assists for Knoxville were Mike Kneeland, Mark Van Vliet, Tim Vitek, and Travis Martell, who each chipped in one.

Bill Zaniboni made 18 saves for the Surge on 21 shots. Mississippi Surge ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. Chad Collins recorded 21 saves for Knoxville. The Ice Bears registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For Knoxville, David Segal was ejected from the game.
