South Division - Blue Sox Thrash Nighthawks, Martha's Vineyard Blanks Ocean State

Upper Valley Nighthawks vs. Valley Blue Sox 

Final Score: Valley 23, Upper Valley 1

 

Holyoke, MA – In the penultimate day of NECBL baseball, the Valley Blues Sox defended Mackenzie Stadium from the visiting Nighthawks, dominating them 23-1 in a wall-to-wall thrashing that saw the Blue Sox put up 18 hits and give up only four hits total. While the Offense it what jumped out on the page, the Valley pitching totaled 10 strikeouts, four of which came from starter Andrew Basel (Northeastern). 

 

The Blue Sox started their scoring early in the game with a three run statement first inning. Nicholas Spaventa (UPenn) doubled, driving the first two runs, and Wyatt Hunt (Monmouth) was able to bring home Spaventa with a single to end the first. Valley continued their scoring in the second with an RBI single from Michael Elko (Richmond), who was able to come home himself on an error by the catcher, and an Issac Wachsmann (Creighton) double. 

 

The third inning saw a huge flood of runs, adding five to their total. Wyatt Hunt came home on a wild pitch, Kai Cunningham (Santa Clara) added one more with a double, which was followed up by a double from Chris Carson (Stony Brook). Michael Elko added to his RBI total with a single, was able to score on a fielder's choice to cap off the inning. 

 

Upper Valley was able to get one run across in the fifth inning with an Anthony Brotz (Marist) double before the Valley Blue Sox returned to their scoring with two runs with a Chris Carson double in the sixth. Rees Kozar (Niagara) tripled in the seventh, clearing the base paths and driving in three runs. 

 

The Blue Sox had another massive inning in the eighth inning. Issac Wachsmann added two more runs with a single, which was followed by an RBI walk and a Rees Kozar two-run single. The huge inning was capped off by a Chris Carson two-run single.

 

Jake Andrew (Mt. St. Mary’s) was given the win for Valley. The Nighthawks’ Jack Ruditzky (Rider) was handed a loss. 

 

The Nighthawks finish the season with an 18-26 record. The Valley Blue Sox get set for their last day of baseball as they face the Danbury Westerners Thursday night.

Ocean State Waves vs Martha’s Vineyard Sharks

Final Score: Martha’s Vineyard 9, Ocean State 0

 

South Kingstown, RI – The Martha’s Vineyard Sharks came into Old Mountain Field on Wednesday night and left with a shutout win over the Ocean State Waves by a score of 9-0. The Sharks struck early and cashed in on their opportunity with runners in scoring position to secure the victory.

 

Vineyard got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. Carter Bentley (Northeastern) started the game off with a walk, and after stealing both second and third base, William Lybrook (Harvard) drove him in via an RBI single.

 

The Sharks added four runs in the third inning after a series of walks to Kyle Cincinnati (Mt St Mary's), Bentley, and Evan Appelwick (Miami) loaded the bases to start the inning. Cincinnati scored on an error, and then Bentley scored on a double play ball to push the lead to 3-0. Then, with Appelwick still on base, Gio Colasante (Harvard) ripped a two-run shot to push the score to 5-0.

 

Vineyard added a run in the fourth on a solo shot from Harley Goodner (Duke) and three more runs in the sixth. Dominic Moats (Maryland) and Cole Mascolo (Trinity College) singled to start the inning. With runners on the corners, Landon Scilley (Liberty) continued the streak, singling as well and scoring Moats. Mascolo was brought around on a Cincinnati RBI single, and Scilley would cross home on a sac fly from Bentley to cap it off at 9-0.

 

Anthony Wilkie (Clemson) got credited with the win for the Sharks for his two no-hit innings, while Andrew Rogovic (Northeastern) took home the loss for the Waves, allowing four runs (two earned) over two innings. This marks the end of the regular season for Martha’s Vineyard with a 25-19 finish, good enough for a playoff spot. Meanwhile, Ocean State closed their season with a 16-28 record, which placed them last in the South Division.

North Shore Navigators vs. Danbury Westerners

Final Score/7: North Shore 4, Danbury 2

 

Danbury, CT- The Westerners hosted the Navigators for an exciting matchup as Danbury is in the hunt for the playoffs with one day left of regular season play. North Shore struck first when Alec Welshans (La Salle) hit a solo home run to put the Navs up 1-0 in the top of the second inning. The next inning, Sam Parks (Stonehill) drove in Simmi Whitehill (Monmouth) on a sac fly to double the Navigators' lead to 2-0. 

 

Danbury would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jack Lutte (Denison) crossed home on an Aidan Cohall (Florida International) sac fly to put Danbury down 2-1. In the top of the fifth, North Shore would fire right back when Davis Baker (UPenn) drove in Simmi Whitehill (Monmouth) on a single to increase the Navigator lead to 3-1. 

 

The next inning, North Shore would add another on an Aidan Sengenberger (Seton Hall) RBI single to further increase the lead to 4-1. Danbury would not go down quietly however, as Aidan Stern (Trinity) would drive in Brice Estep (Coastal Carolina) on a fielder’s choice to cut the Navs’ lead down to 4-2. 

 

With the win, North Shore finishes the season at 16-28 at last place in the North. With the loss, Danbury falls to 20-22, with two more games remaining to potentially slide into the fourth seed for the South.

Mystic Schooners vs. Newport Gulls

Newport, RI- The one seed Gulls hosted the Schooners, who are fighting for the fourth seed with Danbury on Wednesday night for the team's final games of the regular season. 

 

Mystic would strike first, in the top of the first, when Eric Cha (Northeastern) hit a two-RBI single, putting the Schooners up 2-0. Jake Kernodle (Princeton) followed up with an RBI single, increasing the lead to 3-0.Newport answered right back in the bottom of the first, when Randy Seymour (Michigan State) drove in a run on a single, making the score 3-1.

 

Both Schooners that struck in the first inning struck again in the top of the second. Eric Cha (Northeastern) kept things going with an RBI single, which was followed by a Jake Kernodle (Princeton) two-RBI double to increase the Schooner’s lead to 6-1. 

 

Mystic absolutely broke the game open in the top of the third, starting with an Anthony Belisario (UConn) two-run home run to make the score 8-1. Eric Cha (Northeastern) kept his red-hot performance alive with a two-RBI single, increasing the lead to 10-1. Christian Scanlon (Merrimack) would keep the pair of runs party alive, hitting a two-RBI double, increasing the lead to 12-1. Anthony Belisario (UConn) came back up to bat for the second time in the inning, driving in a pair of runs on a single, increasing the Mystic lead to 14-1. David Mendez (Maryland) kept the party alive as well with a two-RBI double, which was followed by a Maddix Dalena (UConn) RBI double to make the score 17-1 Mystic after the top of the third finally ended. .

 

Newport responded the best they could in the bottom of the third, when Randy Seymour (Michigan State) drove in Matt Bolton (Binghamton) on an error, cutting the massive Schooner lead to 17-2. 

 

In the top of the fourth, Christian Scanlon (Merrimack) hit a two-run home run, further increasing the Mystic lead to 19-2. In the bottom of the inning, Ryan Novak (Miami Ohio) hit a two-RBI double, adding to Newport’s efforts to chip away at the lead, making the score 19-4. 

 

The Gulls would really start to fire in the bottom of the sixth, starting when Josh Castellani (Clemson) hit a massive three-run home run, cutting down the lead to 19-7. Adam Agresti (St Johns) followed up with a sac fly, and Mike Gupton (Memphis) scored on error to put Newport down 19-9 going into the seventh. 

 

Mystic was far from done, as in the top of the eighth, Jack Harley (Stetson) hit a sac fly, increasing the lead to 20-9. In the bottom of the inning, Newport struck when Adam Agresti (St Johns) ripped a solo home run to cut the Schooner lead in half, at 20-10.
