South Division - Newport Dominates and Valley take the Battle of the Blue as the Race for the One Seed Tightens

Danbury Westerners vs. Ocean State Waves 

Final Score: Danbury 6, Ocean State 5

 

South Kingstown, RI – The Danbury Westerners defeated the Ocean State Waves 6-5 in a close game that saw both teams take it down to the wire, racking up a total of 16 hits. Joshua Surigao (West Virginia) got the start for the Westerners, throwing seven strikeouts in three innings pitched. 

 

Garrett Larsen (Yale) struck first for the Westerners, stealing home in the top of the first inning to get the scoring going. Danbury added to its lead in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to score  Gavin Donohue (Sacred Heart). 

 

The Waves respond in the bottom half of the same inning. Ryan Gerety (Northeastern) singled, advancing one runner to second and driving in another, bringing the score to 2-1. The waves came crashing in on the Westerners in the fourth and fifth innings. Danbury managed to get one run in the top of the fourth with a Kyle Garbowski (Quinnipiac) single. The Waves then added two runs in the bottom of the fourth with Kayle Pisano (Oregon) scoring on a wild pitch and Coen Niclai (Oregon) adding another run with a double.

 

In the fifth innings, Justin Hackett (Bryant) sent a ball soaring over the wall for a two-run home run, leaving the score at 5-3 in favor of the Waves. 

 

Danbury began to slowly claw their way back into the game with a score in the sixth, and an Aidan Paradine (Siena) RBI double in the seventh, tying the ball game heading into the final two innings of the match. 

 

The Westerners were finally able to regain the lead at the top of the eighth when Jack Lutte (Denison) singled to drive in the go-ahead run and what would be the winning run, as Danbury’s defense was able to get three quick outs in the ninth to get the win.

 

Danbury’s Jackson DiLorenzo (East Carolina) was given the win while his counterpart, Marshall Whitmer (Georgetown), was handed a loss on the season.

 

The Westerners return to action Thursday night as they host cross-town rivals Bristol Blues. The  Ocean State Waves return to the baseball diamond Thursday as they get set to host the North Adams SteepleCats.

Sanford Mainers vs. Newport Gulls

Final Score: Newport 8, Sanford 2

 

Newport, RI – After recently falling out of the top seed in the South Division, the Newport Gulls continue clawing their way back to first with an 8-2 victory over the Sanford Mainers.

 

Newport got the scoring started early, scoring one in the first inning despite not recording a hit. A pitch struck Matthew Bolton (Binghamton) to lead things off, and Bolton would then score after a walk and two groundouts. Sanford took the lead right back, scoring two in the second on RBI singles from Peter Kelinsky (Southern Maine) and Brendan Sencaj (Bentley).

 

Sanford’s defense continued to aid the Gulls, as Newport scored another run without notching a hit. Kyle Branch (Oklahoma) reached on an error, stole second, and advanced to third on another error before coming home on a Ryan Novak (Miami (OH)) RBI. The bats finally woke up for Newport in the third, as the Gulls took a 3-2 lead on a Colby Wallace (East Carolina) RBI single, one of three hits in the inning.

 

Newport got two early baserunners in the fourth with Novak and Matt Ossenfort (Michigan) getting drilled by a pitch. After a double steal, an error by the Sanford catcher and an RBI groundout scored both runners, giving Newport a 5-2 lead. Four of those runs came in innings with zero hits.

 

Another RBI from Novak in the sixth gave the Gulls a 6-2 lead, before RBI singles from Branch and Randy Seymour (Michigan St) in the seventh gave Newport a six-run cushion. Relief pitchers John Downing (Seton Hall) and Marcel Kulik (Virginia Tech) shut the door, giving the Gulls the 8-2 victory off of seven unanswered runs. 

 

CJ Bott (UCLA) earned the win for Newport, pitching an inning of relief in the third. Sanford starter Connor Toriello (Salve Regina) was issued the loss for the Mainers. 

 

Newport climbs to 23-14 with the win, while the Mainers sit at 18-20 but still hold control of second place in the North Division. The Gulls are back at it on Friday at 6:35 pm, hosting the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, while Sanford hopes to bounce back hosting Vermont on Friday at 6:30 pm.

Mystic Schooners vs Martha’s Vineyard Sharks

GAME SUSPENDED AFTER 5TH INNING: Schooners 5, Sharks 4

 

Mystic, CT – The Mystic Schooners and Martha’s Vineyard Sharks game was suspended on Wednesday night after the fifth inning due to light malfunctions. The Schooners held a 5-4 lead before the game was postponed.

 

Mystic jumped on the board right away in the home half of the first inning, with Maddix Dalena (UConn) driving in David Mendez (Maryland) with a single. Eric Cha (Northeastern) followed with his own RBI single, one that scored Davis Johnson (Notre Dame) and made it 2-0 Schooners.

 

Dominic Moats (Maryland) tied the game up for Martha’s Vineyard in the third with his first home run of the year, a two-run shot scoring Landon Scilley (Liberty) and tying the game at 2-2. In the fourth, the Sharks added on another two-run homer to take the lead. This time, it was Blake Binderup (Texas A&M) who belted his third bomb of the season to put the Sharks up 4-2.

 

After a lead-off walk and advancement on a wild pitch to second, Troy Reader (Notre Dame)was able to score on an RBI double by Anthony Belisario (UConn). Johnson drove in Belisario on an RBI single later in the inning to tie the game. Mystic ended up taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Belisario recorded his second RBI double of the game to put the Schooners up 5-4, and that’s where the game was suspended.

 

The Sharks will head to Newport to take on the Gulls on Friday, while the Schooners host the Danbury Westerners on Friday.

Valley Blue Sox vs. Bristol Blues

Bristol, CT- The Blues hosted the Blue Sox for a battle of the Blue with both offenses putting on a clinic for an exciting game. Sean Darnell (Troy) kicked things off for Valley right away when he hit an RBI single to put the Sox up 1-0 in the top of the first. Nick Spaventa (UPenn) followed up by driving in a run on a fielder’s choice to increase the lead to 2-0. Bristol fired back in the bottom of the third when CJ Egrie (Holy Cross) drove in a run on a sac fly to put the Blues down 2-1. In the top of the fourth, Valley added onto their lead when Michael Elko (Richmond) hit an RBI single to make the score 3-1. 

 

In the bottom of the fifth, Tommy Ahlers (Keene State) chipped away at the lead, driving in a run on a single to put Bristol down 3-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Alex Irizarry (Quinnipiac) clutched up for the Blues, tying the game at 3-3 with a solo home run. The game would go back and forth from here on, as Sean Darnell (Troy) would give the lead back to the Blue Sox at 4-3 with an RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, Bristol responded right back when Gianno Merlonghi (Central Conn) drove in two runs on a single to give the lead right back to the Blues at 5-4. Dean O’Niell (UMaine) followed by driving in a run on a sac fly, and Merlonghi came around to score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-4 going into the eighth. 

 

The eighth inning was a big one for the Blue Sox. Chris Carson (Stony Brook) got the rally started with an RBI single to creep back towards Bristol, decreasing their lead to 7-5. Michael Elko (Richmond) drove in another on a single, and Isaac Wachsmann (Creighton) drove in the tying run, making the score 7-7. Next began the walk party, with Sean Darnell (Troy) walking in Carson, and Nick Spaventa (UPenn) walking in Elko to give the lead back to the Blue Sox at 9-7. The walk party translated into the error party, with Wyatt Hunt (Monmouth) and John LaFleur (Holy Cross) each driving in runs on errors to increase the lead to 11-7. Kai Cunningham (Santa Clara) capped things off when he drove in a run on a single to make the score 12-7 Valley. 

 

In the bottom of the eighth, Mikael Peterson (Brown) drove in a run on a single to make the score 12-8, showing fight for the Blues. The next inning, the Blues would threaten to walk it off when Trevor Hansen (Manhattan) hit an RBI double, which was followed by Scott Gell (Stony Brook) driving him in on an error by the shortstop to make the score 12-10. With the opportunity to tie the game and possibly walk it off, the Blues couldn’t get it done as the Blue Sox would take down the number one seed in the South. 

 

Valley improves to 17-19, while Bristol falls to 25-13, still at the top of the South Division.
