The Blues won their fifth straight home game Tuesday night, defeating the South Division leading Newport Gulls by a score of 6-1.
In the bottom of the second, Nate Lincoln (Marist) reached on an error which allowed Dean Oneill (Middle Tennessee State) to score and give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Oneill added to the Bristol lead in the bottom of the third when he singled to right field with the bases loaded and drove in two more runs to make it 3-0 Blues.
Bristol tacked on one more in the sixth, and two in the eighth to make it 6-0 and went on to win 6-1.
The Blues pitching staff took a no-hitter into the ninth inning but Michael Gupton (Samford) singled to break it up. Gupton came in to score later in the inning to break up the shutout as well. James Pazdera (Ramapo) got the start for the Blues and pitched two shutout innings before Benjamin Winslow (Yale) Pedro Leon (Holy Cross) James Ellis (St. Peter’s) and Carson Renner (Penn State) took Bristol the rest of the way as the Blues cruised to a 6-1 win over the defending Fay Vincent Sr. cup winners.
Bristol (18-10) is now only half a game behind Newport (19-10) for the top spot in the South Division. The Blues will battle the Gulls again on Friday night, this time on the road in a game with the possibility of first place in the South Division on the line.
However, Bristol will have to wait to get their sights set on the Gulls. The Blues will first take on the Valley Blue Sox Thursday night in Holyoke, Massachusetts for a 6:35 p.m. game.
