Leesburg Returns the Favor and Shuts Out Winter Park 8-0
Date: Jul 12, 2025
SANFORD, Fla.- The Florida League's best put on a show Tuesday night at Sanford Memorial Stadium, and the result was one that has become the norm in the Florida League - dead even at the end of the night.
For the third year in a row, the Florida Collegiate Summer League All-Star Game ended in a tie, with the 2025 edition finishing after nine innings with six runs each from the East and West All-Stars. The East All-Stars were made up of players from Sanford, DeLand, and Orlando, while the West All-Stars came from Leesburg, Winter Park, and Winter Garden.
The West struck first, taking an early lead in the top of the first. Gabe Young (Winter Park/West Georgia) drew a one-out walk, then moved up to second on a fielder's choice. With one out still on the board, Drew Pynes (Winter Garden/St. Petersburg) lined a single to left field, and Young slid in just ahead of the tag at the plate to put the West ahead.
That early lead would last until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the East All-Stars would finally make their appearance in the scorebook. Daniel Spicher (Sanford/Tallahassee State) started the frame with a double, and moved up to third on a fielder's choice. Spicher then tied the game when Sanford teammate Stewart Puckett (South Alabama) lifted a fly ball to left field, bringing in the first East run on a sacrifice fly.
After three scoreless innings, the East wouldn't have to wait long for their next run. Grant Comeaux (Orlando/Undecided) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth, then moved up to second on a walk to Anthony Saleeba (Sanford/Gulf Coast State). After two straight hitters were retired, Mathew Farner (Orlando/Undecided) gave the East the lead, driving in his Snapper teammate with an RBI single to center.
The West quickly tied the game in the top of the sixth after loading the bases with one out. The West All-Stars got three runners on without the aid of a hit, thanks to two walks and a hit batsmen. The first of those, Roberto Odor (Winter Park/Saint Leo) then scored on an RBI single from Cole Bullen (Leesburg/Florida), evening the score.
The first four runs of the night came one at a time, but the next seven would come in the span of one inning. The East went first, scoring three in the bottom of the sixth on one big swing. Blake Fields (Orlando/Houston) and Puckett reached on an error and a single, bringing up Rashad Robinson (Orlando/West Alabama). Robinson launched one over the left field wall in Sanford for a three-run homer, widening the East lead to 5-2.
The answer from the West would follow in the top of the seventh, which started big. Zach Walker (Winter Garden/Hillsborough CC) launched a home run of his own to cut the lead to 5-3. The lead would be cut to 5-4 on three straight West singles, the last coming from Ledger Pleasant (Leesburg/St. Johns River State). A sacrifice fly from Young tied the game, and the West then took the lead on a dropped third strike wild pitch with one out.
The 6-5 lead would hold to the bottom of the ninth, giving the East just three outs to rally. Robinson would start the inning with a single, giving him a second hit en route to eventually taking home Most Valuable Player honors. Robinson would then steal second, move up to third on an error, and then score the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly from Saleeba.
Prior to the contest was the annual Florida League Home Run Derby, which belonged to Sanford's Dawson Mock (Undecided). The third-year Florida Leaguer launched nine home runs in the first round, sending him to the finals against Orlando's Mathew Farner. Mock then topped Farner 1-0 in the final round to clinch the title.
Florida League teams will return to league play on Thursday, with still almost a week and a half left of the regular season remaining and much, including home field advantage in several rounds of the Florida League Playoffs, still very much up for grabs.
