Vermont Mountaineers vs. Upper Valley Nighthawks (Game One)
Final Score/7: Vermont 5, Upper Valley 0
Hartford, VT – Week 4 player of the week Jaylen Hernandez (Winthrop) proved to fans why he earned this award, as a multi-hit game headlined by a two-run blast led his Vermont Mountaineers to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Upper Valley Nighthawks in game one of Friday’s doubleheader.
The first inning was one to forget for the Nighthawks, as Sam Gates (George Washington) reached on a leadoff walk for Vermont while Hernandez followed with a single. Then, a soft ground ball to the shortstop off the bat of Conlan Daniel (Wright State) was airmailed past the first baseman, who then fired the ball out of play past the catcher, trying to get Hernandez coming home. With Daniel standing on third, the umpire awarded him home as a result, giving Daniel the Little League home run and putting Vermont up 3-0 early.
Hernandez’s deep drive in the third gave the Mountaineers a 5-0 lead, which the Nighthawks could not respond to in the shortened seven-inning contest.
Vermont’s Oliver Pudvar (UConn) and Ryan Brown (Mount St Mary’s) combined for the shutout, with Pudvar getting the win. Ryan Sheehy (Old Dominion) was issued the loss for the Nighthawks.
