HARTFORD, VT. - The Maxfield Sports Complex held a wild affair as the Upper Valley Nighthawks rallied past the Valley Blue Sox in a 10-7 contest. The loss snapped the Nighthawks' six-game losing streak and stopped any momentum the Blue Sox were trying to build over their road trip.
Valley wasted no time as they brought in two runs in the second inning thanks to RBI contributions from Nicholas Spaventa and Gavin Schrader. The offense had no plans of being halted as Mike Lucarelli also scored to make it 3-0. Sebastian Mexico made his presence known as well as he extended the lead to four in the same inning.
Pitching-wise, Christopher Batuyios pitched four solid innings for the Blue Sox, allowing just two hits to the Nighthawks before being relieved. But this game was far from over as Upper Valley found its rhythm in the fifth inning, getting contributions from Kyle Neri and Cameron Boardman each scored a run to cut their deficit in half.
The sixth inning came along, and the game erupted as Upper Valley ran in eight batters to home plate and erased their deficit. Elite play from Boardman, Ryan Presiano, and Cooper Blauser knotted the game at six.
In the seventh, the Nighthawks took complete control as Neri's run put Upper Valley on top for the first time of the night. An insurance run by Blauser made the game 8-6, but Valley was not going down without a fight. Lucarelli's second run of the evening put Valley within one in the eighth inning. Cole Fellows and Nick Shuhet answered right back and pushed the lead to 10-7 for the Upper Valley Nighthawks.
Sebastian Mexico led the scoring for Valley with three hits and an RBI, with three other batters adding multi-hit efforts. The Blue Sox could not overcome the late surge from Upper Valley despite collecting 13 baserunners.
Valley, now sitting at 11-10, will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they return to Holyoke, Massachusetts, to take on the North Adams Steeple Cats at 6:35 p.m.
