The Newport Gulls swept a doubleheader against the Upper Valley Nighthawks on Monday, June 30th. The Gulls closed out June with a 15-7 record in the season’s opening month, along with a 9-1 confines at the friendly confines of Cardines Field. Upper Valley wrapped up June
with a 9-11 mark on the year.

Monday's double header was intended to be two seven inning games, but these foes had other ideas for the first game. Newport - playing as the road team in game one, won a seesaw 9-8 game which ended up going nine innings. J.T Guererro and Aidan Coleman
(Pittsburgh) started for the Nighthawks and Gulls respectively and both got touched up a tad. Guerrero gave up three runs in as many innings while Coleman was chased from the game in his third inning of work, going 2.1 and giving up four.
Newport played catchup during the game’s later stages, falling behind 4-3 in the third, a deficit which extended to 5-3 in the fourth. However, Newport chipped away and eventually tied the game in the top of the seventh to force extras.

In the eighth, with the ghost runner in effect, Matthew Bolton (Binghamton) launched a three run homer over the right field fence to give the Gulls a 8-5 lead. However, Marcel Kulik (Virginia Tech) couldn’t slam the door in the inning’s bottom half, he allowed the ghost runner to score and gave up two earned runs to once again bring the game even. With the winning run 90 feet away, Kulik buckled down and got Newport out of the inning and allowed the game to continue.

Newport ended up taking the game in the ninth and final inning when Cade Brown (Georgia Tech) scored, CJ Bott (UCLA) shut down the Nighthawks in his first summer appearance to earn his first win of the year.

The second game went the “full” seven innings, but still had its share of chaos. A fog delay in the fifth inning which lasted about a half hour and nearly resulted in the game being called.

The score at that point was 2-1 in favor of Newport, solo homers from both Bolton and Brown gave the Gulls the edge before the stoppage. When play resumed, the Gulls already had two men on with no one out. A.J. Evasco (Kansas State) walked to load the bases and Colby
Wallace (Eastern Carolina) doubled Newport’s run output, increasing the lead to 4-1. Brown and Randy Seymour (Michigan St.) both brought runs home via the sacrifice and put the game out of reach for Upper Valley, upping the Nighthawks deficit to 6-1, which is where the game ended.

Next up for Newport is a crucial clash in Massachusetts with the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks, who are only two games behind the Gulls in the Southern Division. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM and can be watched on NECBL+
