Appelwick and O'Brien Earn Week 3 Player and Pitcher of the Week

Date:  Source: New England Collegiate Baseball League

The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) announces the Week 3 Player & Pitcher of the Week honors, including honorable mentions for the week concluding on Sunday, June 22nd.

Martha’s Vineyard first baseman Evan Appelwick (Miami of Ohio) and Newport right-hander Finbar O’Brien (Gonzaga) took home the honors this week after contributing in big ways in their teams’ victories.

After starting the season 1-5, Martha’s Vineyard has been on a tear, winning their past seven games. Appelwick has been an integral part of this success, as in this week's slate of games, he hit .462 with three home runs and eight RBIs. His biggest game came in the 12-0 onslaught of the North Shore Navigators, as he went 2-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs while also reaching base via a walk and a hit by pitch.

After starting the NECBL season hitless through three games, Appelwick has found his rhythm that he displayed for the RedHawks this past season. Starting 58 games for the team, Appelwick hit .322 with 68 hits and 21 home runs, successfully tying the program’s single-season home-run record.

Newport’s O’Brien only recorded one start this week, but he was phenomenal. In a league where rosters are deep and arms are frequently rotated, it’s rare to see a player throw deep into games. O’Brien remained in the June 17th contest against the North Shore Navigators for only five innings and through his five innings of work, O’Brien struck out 11, giving up no hits and surrendering only one base runner off a hit by pitch in the fifth.

This strikeout total matched his season high with the Bulldogs, as he sat down 11 in a May 2nd contest against Loyola Marymount. The Gulls will rely on O’Brien to replicate these performances as they sit just half a game behind the Bristol Blues in a tight battle for first place in the South Division.

Appelwick’s Sharks take on the Bristol Blues tonight at 7:05pm at the Shark Tank, while O’Brien’s Gulls travel to Sanford, Maine, tonight at 6:30pm to take on the Mainers.
