NEWPORT RIIt was a beautiful Friday evening in Newport, Rhode Island as the Newport Gulls hosted the Mystic Schooners at Cardines Field. It was a packed house of 2,891 fans that came to cheer on the Gulls. Kade Shatwell (Austin Peay St.) was on the mound for Newport and Andrew Cutler (George Washington) was on the bump for Mystic.

It was a bit of a slow start for both offenses as there were only a handful of hits scattered through the first few innings for both of these teams. Newport finally got their bats rolling for the first time in the last few games as they scored four runs in the 4th inning to take the lead of mystic and they never looked back scoring in every inning after that.

A few key players for the Gulls were Kyle Branch (Oklahoma) who got on base in four of his five at bats, coming around to score twice for the Gulls.

It was an all around effort by the Newport Gulls to pull out the Friday night victory, making some clutch plays on defense with double plays and strikeouts and getting the bats going with 14 total hits and having every Gull reach base at least once.

With those clutch plays and capitalizing off mistakes by Mystic, Newport was able to plate 11 runs which was enough to get back into the win column and move to 8-6 on the summer, as Mystic fell to 6-7 with this loss.

The Gulls are on the road for the next few days as they wont be back at Cardines field until this Wednesday, June 25th as they host the Danbury Westerners.

Before that game, the Gulls travel to Danbury for a game on Saturday, June 21st and then they travel up to Maine for a rare Monday away game against the Sanford Mainers. Catch Saturday's game at Danbury on the NECBL+.
